When I heard the news that TequilaCon was going to be in Vancouver this year I was very happy for The Canadians and The West Coasters but not so psyched for myself. I mean, do not get me wrong, I adore Canada and have never been to Vancouver so would be very excited to go but… I wanted to be able to teleport there, thus avoiding airport headaches, airplane travel, expense, and time off from work.
And then, not that I need to mention this but it does legitimize my concerns, my work had an all staff meeting with “good news!” that I’m very sure no one was tricked into believing was actually of the good variety. I’m still employed for now. I don’t exactly trust that I will still be employed in April. And the lack of trust here has nothing to do with my self worth tank. But even if I do still have a job then it would nooooot be a wise time for me to be like “oh, hey suckas, I’m gonna go get my tequila on with all my friends, byyyyyyyyeeeeee!” so long story mid-sized-paragraph-long: I’m not going to TequilaCon 2010 in Vancouver.
If you have or had any intention of going to TequilaCon, I hope I don’t have so much influence over you that you change your mind (read: please still go to TC10), but if not and you’re on the east coast or had any plans of travelling to NYC for dates spanning April 24, 2010, please consider joining me…
2nd annual BeerHer
Saturday, April 24, 2010
6:00pm Eastern (18:00) – 4:00am Eastern (04:00) / end
The Ginger Man
11 East 36th Street
Neighborhood: Murray Hill
Borough: Manhattan
NY, NY 10016
Tel: 212-532-3740
Bring extra monies, these guys even have beer to go, if you like it.
One of my most favorite people in the world chose this spot and when I saw it I squeeeeeed just a little bit. They have over 150 beers in draft or bottle form and a really simple yet awesome German-style food menu.
We’re gathering to mingle and have fun. Please show up ready to socialize with the whole group. Also, this is a drama-free event. We will NOT be spending the evening gossiping or bellyaching about other people or our shitty lives, we are there to PARTY and drink beer and be happy. All people with same minded desire are welcome to attend.
And if you start drama at me expect the HBIC to come out and tell you to zip it. Oh, and we’re going to a barrrrrrr so don’t bring anybody under 21 for the purposes of drinking. I’m not spending the evening explaining how your guest who cannot hold his liquor looks like Don Johnson even though he thinks he’s dressed like Colin Farrell or Aaron fucking Carter and I will have no sympathy for any young’uns who get their fake IDs confiscated.
The favor of your Yes reply to me via this blog post, Twitter, Facebook, email, or txt message is requested by Friday, April 9 at 11:59pm Eastern. This gives me a general head count so we know if we seriously need to try to reserve space or if we can just freestyle walk in there. Also, I just like knowing who’s going to show up in case we change venues so I can notify you that we’re moving to a new spot during that night. Don’t want anyone thinking “wow, everyone hates me, no one’s here and no one told me they wouldn’t be here!” cuz that’s like having The Naked Dream. You know the one. If you tell me you’re coming and then later are not able to come please mention that too.
I am so fucking stoked I can’t fucking stand it.
Update: Yes, YES, oh HELL yes, men are welcome to attend this event. Just make sure you bring a bra to burn. (Kidding about the bra part!)
Damn, I heart you.
I am there!
So bummed you won’t be able to make it a three-peat TequilaCon performance… but I totally understand the work/finance pressures. That sucks. Have a total blast with everyone at BeerHer – with 150 beers, you’ll all have your work cut out for you!

I can’t go to Vancouver either, but I highly recommend that you go at some point. Lovely city, lovely people.
Moving on…
I would so much love to go to BeerHer! But I don’t think I can. We’re taking Lil’ M to Canada in June and I have to save my monies. Otherwise, you know I’d be there, in my favorite place in the world with at least one (and probably more) of my favorite people in the world.
Plus? Lucy and Ricky lived in Murray Hill! Can’t get a better pedigree than that!
Wait, I take that back. She couldn’t have lived in Murray Hill because she lived on 68th street and that’s too far uptown… why was her phone number Murray Hill 5, etc. ?
This is crazy. I’m wearing a Ginger Man shirt right now! I shit you not! Love that bar! At 6PM the joint shouldn’t be too crowded either.
Count me in! That is, if menfolk are welcome at an event with “Her” in the name.
Good question. Murray Hill is defined on Wikipedia as the area where this bar is, and Yelp mentioned it was there so I’m 97.3% confident those 2 pieces of info add up to Murray Hill.
Heartbroken you and Dawg won’t be at Tequilacon this year.
Hope to see you May 8th in NYC though!
I guess I should answer ALL the comments.
Robin, thank you for picking the place.
Jenny, I really wish the world had no revolvement around jobs and money because otherwise I would BE THERE and BeerHer would be the night before like it should be. If I can go to TC next year I’ll make sure BeerHer is the night before again where it should be.
Finn, how ironic that you’re missing out on both events so you can go to Canada! I dig that a lot.
Earl, that is hilarious. I was slightly worried you’d hate this location because it’s a “chain” that originated in Texas, so glad to know you love this place and that you’re going to be there!!!!!!!!!! (squee!)
Dave2, you wait one second there sir. I said nothing about Dawg not going to TC10. I don’t know if he’s going or not. He worked a triple shift yesterday (regular work, event work, vollies) so I hadn’t even talked to him about this before I posted because he was asleep. I think he remains undecided about his arrival to Canada. He really wants to go, and his job/finances are much more stable to let him if he chooses.
Aw, I’d love to go to Vancouver or even hang for beers down your way, but alas, my vacation budget was blown out of the water by the trip to Vegas in December
I will not be going to either event, but I never really planned to go to TequilaCon, anyway. BeerHer sounds awesome – but that weekend is my husband’s b-day AND Z’s 1st Communion, and I am REALLY sure I can’t get out of that.
Damn! So wish I could swing TWO NYC trips in one year – but, alas, no.
That sounds like a fun time, and I wish I could make it!
Oh, I don’t mind chains. Well, some chains. Love Morton’s and Smith and Wollensky’s. Don’t really love TGiFs or Hooters. And any place that sells good beer, and The Ginger Man sells REALLY good beer, is jake by me.
Speaking of things that are “jake”, here’s a quote from The Ginger Man by JP Donleavy that adorns the bar.
“…when you don’t have any money, the problem is food. When you have money, it’s sex. When you have both it’s health, you worry about getting rupture or something. If everything is simply jake then you’re frightened of death.”
Oh, and technically it is in Murray Hill even though I’ve always thought of that part of Midtown as being the Garment District. But the Garment District ends at 5th Ave and The Ginger Man is slightly east of that. So Murray Hill it is.
Lucy and Ricky’s number was Murray Hill 5-9975 because, at the time, all phone numbers on the East Side of Manhattan used the Murray Hill exchange.
Ta da!
I will be making a sad face that you aren’t there, but I understand and will also be raising a pint glass in your honor at some point in the evening — I plan on drinking a lot of beers and I’ll be happy to know you’re drinking beers at the same time, even if it’s a few time zones away.
Crystal, I definitely understand the vacation budget being spent. I spent a bunch to go to VT for New Year’s to see family. It’s really expensive to travel and have a fun vacation.
Sybil, yah, Z’s 1st communion trumps ALL.
Britt, I will make sure there is another get-together event during BlogHer if no one else makes one.
Adam, are you still coming to BlogHer? If so, see comment above.
Earl, I am happier and happier about the venue choice every time you leave a comment.
Vahiiiiiid, I kinda forgotted about the time difference, and am now extra stoked that I will be drunk BEFORE you! Muhahahahaha! ha! ha! haaaa! ha. ha. And I will definitely drink a beer to you. And one to Jenny. And one to Dave 2. And one to Brandon. And did I miss anyone on the TC committee? We’ll toast to you, it is mandated.
Soooo tempting, but I already planned a girl’s night at my house months ago, and I can’t back out. Bummer – you’re only like a 7 hour drive or something!
Does it count if I go to The Ginger Man in Austin? Actually, it looks like we’ll be traveling to Dallas for an event for my daughter. Though I see that The Ginger Man has a location there as well. Anyway, I haven’t completely ruled out a trip that weekend and now I get to choose between both coasts should it work out.
Karen, you are having your own con/her. That’s what matters.
Ren, when I met you at BeerHer you knew me way better than I knew you and… that freaked me out. I don’t think it’s something that would freak me out anymore, I’d just let it roll on by and take the time to get to know you, and I am really glad you never felt any bad vibe from my part, because obviously if I helped to plan RenYC I was putting in the effort to be a better friend than I had been.
If you can make it to NYC for any reason – vacation, Dave York 2, BlogHer, whatever – we can do a Ginger Man visit then!
I wanna go!!!! But I can’t. School.
Wish I could go to TC, but I can’t (damn unemployment and brokeness). So we’re having a little gathering here in Sebring instead. If you can’t go to the fun, you have to bring the fun to you!
