PS: before I was ready to quit, I actually shouted out on my blog to anyone who could get me cheaper smokes and I got myself a dealer…because I chose to keep smoking and violate the law by moving cigarettes across state lines.
But then I quit. If someone had told me that I didn’t need to quit because they could send them to me even cheaper, I would probably have stopped talking to that person because in general, I don’t like talking to stupid people.
*sigh* We’re stupid, but we mean well.

I’m seriously going to start vlogging all of my opinion pieces for “tone”.
I obviously secretly support my boyfriend in his effort to quit smoking.
But let’s remove me and him from the equation because I think that clouds everyone’s judgment on this matter.
I’m just surprised that if someone says they are quitting smoking for [plug in whatever reason you feel like plugging in, but there are so many reasons to quit and it comes down to all of them simultaneously, really] that anyone’s response would be to encourage them to continue smoking.
And let’s plug me back in for one second. I don’t mind that Dawg smokes but he minds that he smokes. His motivations for quitting are his own, and are out of my control. I support him in any decisions he makes because that is what people in healthy relationships do for each other. And… well, that’s that.
I’m not offended by anyone’s choice to react to Dawg’s post in a different way than I personally am choosing to react, but I certainly have an opinion about it over here on my blog.
And I don’t think anyone is stupid. I just see this situation differently than the next person… ya know? Humans, and all that.
I need to refrain from commenting and just put my opinions on MY blog.

Although I really was just kidding with my comment, how it actually could have sounded never occurred to me. I don’t know if it’s that I don’t feel well or I wasn’t paying attention, but when I read your post I realized how idiotic what I said was.
As a recovering smoker myself I try to be supportive of anyone who wants to quit because I know how hard it is.

If the reason he’s quitting is because of money, which is the ONLY reason he mentioned on his blog, then coming up with another option seems perfectly reasonable.
If you really liked cheese but the cheese in France was getting too expensive, so you couldn’t eat it anymore, would I be “ignorant” (to co-opt one retard’s word) in trying to offer a way to get you cheaper cheese?

Ahhhh, but he didn’t *ask* for a cheaper source of cigarettes. He said that he quit (decision already made), and he posted a widget of how much money he was saving that also listed how much of his life he was saving. Had he not also posted the widget my original point still stands — he didn’t ask for cheaper sources.

I love the Colin Hay episode of Scrubs. Man, I can’t wait to have a TV I’m allowed to watch whenever I want. I might hibernate for a few months just to get caught up on my shows. Holy shit, then I’ll still be behind on them.

BTW, I understand your distress about the enabling. As an ex-smoker, no. I’d neverever encourage someone to keep on smoking because I can hook him up with cheaper cigarettes; however, when I was still smoking, my biggest fear was that everyone else would prove to be stronger than I was, and I’d be the last smoker standing. That fear, combined with nicotine’s ability to fuck with my reasoning anyway, turned me into a huge enabler of the wrongest kind.
Up here in Cornwall (I was going to say “in Canada,” but I’m sure there are healthier cities and towns), it seems like everyone smokes. And cigarettes already are $8/pack. It’s insane. I once stood behind a person at a convenience store who ordered 2 packs of cigarettes and paid $17. I thought she’d bought gas, too, but NO. That’s all. Holy shit.
K, I looooooove that episode of Scrubs. It’s what made me get into Colin as a solo artist.
When I have TV again I’m hibernating indefinitely.
I was getting really bad with my coffees, paying about $90/month for Starbucks. I’ve cut that out of my budget completely and now have money to pay for necessities again. But, … I didn’t quit coffee.
I just make my own.

(p.s. poppy, this was a great post. i have often wondered why smokers get so much encouragement, even from non smokers. when i quit, it was a bizarre experience. although i am oh so happy to be free of the habit.)

It is hard to know what to say when someone says they are going to quit smoking. As a non-smoker that really hates cigarettes, it makes me very happy when anyone wants to quit. But if you encourage too much, or act too happy, you run the risk of offending the person or making them feel even worse if they are not able to quit.
It is kind of like the situation where your friend finally breaks up with her abusive boyfriend that you absolutely hated, and is bitching about him. You join in, telling her how much of an assbag he was and that she is so much better without him, and then the next thing you know she has hooked back up with him again and things are strained between the two of you. For this reason, it is sometimes better not to say too much when someone decides to quit smoking (or fucking dirty whores).
