I went to see I Am Legend today since it’s my continuation of Fridays off in December. I have stats:
Number of times I almost cried: 4
Number of times I did cry: 2
Number of times I bawled my eyes out: 3
Number of times I almost walked out: 2
Number of times I laughed: too many to count
Number of times I thought, “this really isn’t anything like the book…”: too many to count
Number of times I thought, “perhaps it was a mistake to go to this alone…”: 5
Number of times I jumped, swore, hid my eyes, almost screamed, etc.: 7
Number of times I was amused by coincidences to my life: 4
If you like Will Smith you like this movie. If you like Last Man on Earth movies you like this movie.
If you don’t like cruelty to animals (which I don’t) then you’ll have to decide if you can handle seeing this movie or not. I could handle it, but just barely and I cried.
Film grade: A-
Grade for being like the book: D+

ok.
Well, I can’t go see it.
I can’t even watch National Geographic or Discovery Channel when the lions eat the hippos.. or whatever.
I cry.
Then I get mad at the camera man for filiming it.
Then I get drunk.. cause what’s better than a piss drunk crying chick?
sigh.

The pouty lips that accompany the crying, which tend to attract people to your lips. (My lips get twice as big when I cry. Dunno why.)
You could hide your eyes. But I was TERRIFIED and crying and considering walking out for one of the scenes with Sam the dog, and I could not pull it back together for quite some time, so you’re probably making the right call.

Yeah, now I’m not so sure that I’ll be seeing it….
December 14th, 2007 at 5:17 pm
Go see it with DH or wait until it comes out on DVD.
December 14th, 2007 at 5:34 pm
Oh I want to see it even more now since I read your post!
I love making a complete fool out of myself in theaters!

Wow…quite the range of emotions. I wasn’t planning on seeing it, actually. I think I am going to see Enchanted this weekend.

Pre Pon, definitely go to see it.
Fab, it is no surprise to you that I am complex in my introspection.

There are not many movies where I see the trailer and say “I have to see this.”
This is one of those movies. Thanks for the unique review (very clever, but what else should we expect from the Popster).
I will catch it one of these days.
December 14th, 2007 at 11:01 pm
I am nothing if not unique.
December 15th, 2007 at 6:52 am
I’ll have to add it to my netflix because I doubt I will get to the movies in the next month…thanks for the recommendation.

Welcome.
December 15th, 2007 at 10:16 am
I still haven’t seen a trailer for it, but I’ve heard people talking about it. Definitely will go see it. I think I’ve liked every Will Smith movie I’ve seen.
December 15th, 2007 at 11:50 am
You do realize I posted the trailer. Yes? Or, are you trying not to look?
December 15th, 2007 at 1:01 pm
Sorry – I meant that I haven’t seen any commercials for it, but have heard of it through other means.
December 15th, 2007 at 1:12 pm
Ah. Definitely go see it. Very good, as long as you’re only expecting it to be very loosely based on the book. Instead of 1976 and 1979 it’s 2009 and 2012.

I so hate it when adaptions don’t adapt. Abhor, abort !
December 15th, 2007 at 7:24 pm
Yes, it was quite a drastic change from the original. I barely recognized. Still vampires, still Last Man on Earth, still him trying to find a cure, but all the circumstances are completely different.
December 15th, 2007 at 7:25 pm
Then, by ye lords, it should’ve been called something else.
December 15th, 2007 at 7:30 pm
Such as I Iz Legend, Yo Yo Yo Check Me Out or something.
December 15th, 2007 at 7:35 pm
It stars Will Smith, so I guess it would be
“Yo ! Big Will ! uh-hah ! Legend Uh ! Uh ! Uh-hah !”
December 15th, 2007 at 7:38 pm
He is pretty pumped in this movie… Big Will is a very fitting name.
December 15th, 2007 at 7:40 pm
ah, don’t stir my jealousy.
Uh-hah !

December 17th, 2007 at 9:46 am
I’m just afraid it’s going to be kinda vapid.
December 17th, 2007 at 9:52 am
I think you’re not gonna like it. I think you’ll complain “not enough vampires” even though the story is much more complex than that. Are you gonna do that?
December 17th, 2007 at 9:55 am
I don’t mind tension and atmosphere instead of lots of vampires. It just looks like they took out the “thinking” part and made it palatable to the masses.
December 17th, 2007 at 12:38 pm
Book, cover, judge. Just go see it.

It was a FANTASTIC movie that could stand on its own merits. Will Smith masterfully expressed a wide emotional range and depth that raised my respect for him as an artist.
