I was going to see a movie on Monday night but the weather was kinda crappy and the restaurant I wanted to go to ahead of time isn’t open Mondays, so I went tonight instead. I saw the Coen brothers film No Country for Old Men. Observations that give nothing about it away:
- It isn’t as bloody as I expected.
- The weapon of choice for the bad guy is really freakin’ cool.
- It didn’t end how I expected.
- Our little Brand from Goonies is allllll growed up, and looking pretty hot.
If you like… oh, let’s say, maybe, Blood Simple then go see this film. If you don’t like the Coen brothers then I think you’re wasting your money because you know you won’t be happy.
I love the Coen brothers so I give it a solid B+ overall, with a partial grade deduction for all the yucky animal scenes put together, which I can always do without. (Ok, so that gives something away. Sorry.) I give myself an A+ for going to this movie alone even though I’d read it was kinda bloodfesty.

Oh, I loved this movie! I give it a solid A. Javier Bardem alone is worth the price of admission. He almost made me poop my pants, he was so scary!

I have been meaning to check this movie out. I have no intention of pooping my pants, however.

Did you just give yourself an A? I think you’re throwing the curve.

H, his voice alone makes me want to hide invisibly in a corner.
Fab, then bring your favorite teddy bear to hide behind for the Javier scenes.
Avi, of course I gave myself an A(+). I’m awesome.

Have I told you recently how kick-ass you are? Glad to hear the date night went well… so proud of you!

Yes, surprisingly unstrange to have date night with/by myself. I feel like I know myself 20% better than 5:00pm yesterday.

Self-dates are often the best kind. And let me just say that going to the movies alone is better than going with someone who either talks through the whole thing, or sits there like a lump looking at her watch every five minutes.
I’m still thinking about No Country a week later. I really need to see it again. The ending still really bothers me, and yet I wholly respect it.

I will not attend movies with people who talk through them. I also will not tolerate boredom vibes. I will move seats in these scenarios with a “don’t follow me” glare.
I had the whole short row to myself, it was awesome.
The ending surprised me. It felt slightly cop-outish but at the same time completely practical. There are not usually tidy endings in real life, and the Coen brothers are respecting that.

That’s one of the two movies I hope to see in the next two weeks. Can’t wait.
But grisly animal scenes? Really? Maybe I can just close my eyes during those parts.

Not torture, but animals are not spared in the wake of Anton Chigurh (or Llewelyn Moss).

Here in Austin (woncha come down?) we have a place called Alamo Drafthouse. It’s a movie theatre but they took out every other row and put in tables. Then they add wait staff and a grill and a great menu and good sense of humor so you can actually have dinner AND a movie at the same time. It’s awesome!

We have that here, it’s just a bit south of my location. Besides, I can’t get my favorite Italian food at the movie theater…
