I know I’ve asked before, but … really, seriously, it’s the dilemma of every winter. Where do you shop for clothes? Do you shop online or do you actually go into the store?
Keep in mind that I still adhere to prices from 1983. If anything costs more than $20 I balk. BALK.
And how the hell do I get all this sparkly shit off me? (Totally unrelated.)

I buy everything online.
I never, EVER buy clothes online.
Gecko, good point about Zappos.
Avi and Britt, you’ve both been terribly helpful.
I’m a big fan of eBay, since I’m notoriously cheap, but I also shop at Target and occasionally Wal-Mart. But you knew that already….
I like shopping at the mall, but usually only check the sale racks, unless I have a special occasion to dress for, like my company Christmas party. I still haven’t been shopping for that yet, and it’s fast approaching. Eek!
You must embrace the shiny and sparkly, Poppy. It’s good for you…..
B, nooooo. No shiny and sparkly.
I shop mostly online, at JcPenneys, Target, Sierra Trading Post and JCrew (when they are having sales). I have had to give up on the under 20 bucks thing….
I love Old Navy & go in the store. Today I went there and got a cashmere sweater, cotton sweater & a pair of pants that cost $0.99…they were marked down from $32.50 to $10.99 and I had a $10 coupon (if you get a credit card there, they send you these coupons). They were also giving $10 off for anyone who spent more than $50. Yay!
My favorite place to shop for clothes is Macy’s. They have fantastic sales regularly and a lot of times I get coupons from them in the mail (and I do not have one of their credit cards) or find printable ones online to get extra percentages off. I have gotten so much good stuff there for way under $20. I think the lowest price was a long sleeved Jones New York shirt I got there for $2.80. I don’t even bother with places like Target for clothes because Macy’s is even cheaper and I can get high quality long lasting clothes there. I hope this helps.
Sorry, I was trying to be helpful! I was saying I don’t buy clothes online - only in the store. Because you get them cheaper (usually) and you can try on. I have to be able to try on.
But,… where do you go? Boutiques? Or, major chains? I’m trying to find new places to go.
Mish, Bearette, and Jen, thanks! Very helpful.
Oh, sorry.
Ummm…. I don’t really know. I walk through the mall and go into every single store and try on every single thing that might work - and end up buying 1 or 2 things. My jeans usually come from Express. But other than that, I dunno.
I haven’t been to express since I was 17. It might be time again…
I like express’s jeans, but you’ll definitely pay more than 20. I like to go to stores because I have to try things on. Old Navy and Gap both have good sales racks, as does jc penney and target
I almost never buy online. On average, I like only one tenth of the things I try on, so I see no sense wasting all that money on return shipping.
As for where to go, I’m with you on the 1983 prices, which is why over half my clothes are from Target and Kohl’s.
I never said I was a fashion plate.
I used to buy my jeans at Old Navy and the teenie bopper stores. I’m too old for that now. I’ve found that I HAVE to buy “good” jeans - what with the lumps and sags, etc. :-)
I will never again buy stuff without trying it on first (been there, done that, too costly & too much work to return/exchange).
I’m cheap, too, but fussy. I have found some very cute casual stuff at Wal-mart & Zellers and, while I like Old Navy stuff, it never fits. I would kill to have a Target up here.
For my dress/work clothes I usually have to shop in fat-chick stores to get a proper fit. I don’t mind looking like a schlub at home but I gotta look decent at the office… even though it’s only jackholes who see me (I don’t deal with the public). Anyway, here in Canada, that would be Penningtons.
You, however, my dear skinny-minny can probably shop anywhere but, like me, probably have to be in the right mood. When I am lucky enough to be in that mood, I go everywhere & try on everything. If I were to try that in the wrong mood, someone would likely perish.
Everyone, shoooocking, I know, but France does not have a Target. Next country over does!
I have this habit of buying from Old Navy online and hating most of it. So, I’ll start listening to you all and going into the stores to shop.
Sour, B can attest to the fact that it takes me about 13 seconds to go from “yay, shopping!” to “zomg get me the eff outta this place NOWWWWWWW!!!!!” When I crash I crash hard.
Overstock.com has good prices, but I’ve never bought from them. Honestly, since losing a buttload of weight (ironically, not off my butt), I’ve pretty much been dressing in hand-me-downs and gift clothes. I have bought two new pairs of jeans, but that’s about it.
In other words, I’m no help at all.
Sorry I couldn’t help, I do most of my shopping at K’s closet. ‘Cause it’s free, she has excellent taste, & wears my size. ;-) There are days I would be walking around in my undies if it weren’t for her.
