So, Ms. Mishka graced my blog with a wonderful comment in which she mentioned that when she’s doing other things she’ll pop certain movies into here DVD player and press play then have them running in the background because she knows she won’t miss anything by doing this. I wish I was home right now so I could go through my DVD collection because I’d like to tell you all the movies I do that with, or could do that with, but I’m not so I’ll just list a few.
Sixteen Candles - The whole “I have a crush on him but he doesn’t know” only to find out it is requited? Magic.
A Christmas Story - “Meatloaf beatloaf” and the ensuing “Be a good boy. Show mommy how the piggies eat!” makes me laugh so hard I wet my pants.
Best In Show - Busy bee. Nuff said.
Shaun of the Dead - Zombies. Zombies. Zombies. Beer. Zombies. Tim and Dawn from “The Office” UK. Zombies.
Star Wars IV - My first movie ever, therefore the movie that will always have a special place in my heart.
Stranger Than Fiction - Maggie Gyllenhaal is so fucking hot in this. And, again, the requited love thing.
Groundhog Day - Bill. Hilarity. Repetition. Formula for success.
Lost in Translation - The awkward love connection that has no real basis in physicality draws me in.
Scrooged - Carol Kane punching Bill with a toaster while dressed as a fairy. What other movie has that?! None!
Ghostbusters - Stay-Puft marshmallow man equals evil.
(Ok, I need to stop now because now I’m just listing Bill Murray movies because I love him. In the stalkery way.)
I’ll go back through and fill in why, but I want to know what you’re thinking, so: Please, tell me, what movies do you or could you do this with?

Sixteen Candles - of course!!! (as well as Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club)
Steel Magnolias
Dirty Dancing
The Wedding Singer (and pretty much every single Adam Sandler film… except Little Nikki)
Beaches
The Kind and I
My Fair Lady
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
OK, I lie. Because I would totally end up having to stop what I was doing to watch these movies.
- Pulp Fiction
- Reservoir Dogs
- The Lost Boys
- Pink Floyd : The Wall (Duh!)
- Le Fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain
- Le Pacte des Loups
- The Princess Bride
- Excalibur
- Le Dîner de Cons
I’m sure I could think of more if I could see my DVD collection. ;-)
Groundhog Day… I could watch that movie over and over again
He he he
Say Anything
Never Been Kissed
Bridget Jones’s Diary
The Sound of Music
I’m such a girl, obviously.
Did your blog just eat my comment, or do you have moderation turned on??
I thought only Blogger ate comments. :-(
OK, your blog hates me (or at least hates my list), because twice now it didn’t post. And now I am paranoid I will have four comments in a row, two of which are doubles. (If that is the case, I am sorry.)
It’s like it’s my first day on the Internet or something. Sigh.
(Stef, got caught in the spam filter. Fixed!)
(Everyone else, yay.
I’ll comment on your comments in a bit.)
Geek! Ghostbusters as background movie!
I’ll gladly copy Mike’s list and add Kill Bill (both) to it. NBK also is a perfect background movie.
Too bad YMDB/Shompy lost their dbase a while ago, but I think this list explains everything, also the missing Top20!
ANY Bill Murray, Drew Barrymore, Adam Sandler movie.
And Ferris Bueller. Anyone? Anyone?
I got an e-mail from my brother one day:
B - I can die now.
Me - OK. Why?
B - I just shook Bill Murray’s hand.
Think Birth of a Nation might work? I find if I am agitated when I clean I do so much better.
The list is too long to put here.
Bill Murray has a summer home not far from my house.
Yeah, that’s all I got.
Hi everybody, updated the post to include explanations.
Britt, 50 First Dates is my preference of Drew and Adam movies.
Mikey, ooooh, Excalibur! I counter with Dragonslayer.
Gecko, I forgot about Serenity…
Stef, can you believe I’ve never seen Say Anything? I’m working on rectifying the situation. So far hasn’t panned out.
Franky, Kill Bill!!! GOOD CALL.
Tug, ironically I do watch Ferris in the background while I do stuff but forgot to list it. I loved Matthew back in the day… And if I shook Bill’s hand my life would be kinda almost complete.
RW, you have an excellent point.
Avi, thanks for trying, though. Because your effort to put even one movie would have been nice but no movies is way better.
Jfu, …
(Sorry, what? I was drooling over Bill.) And, um, how come you listed NO movies? All you’ve got.
I do love 50 First Dates as well - equally as romantic as “I Wanna Grow Old With You” from The Wedding Singer.
I’ll see your Dragonslayer, and raise you Deathstalker I, II, III and IV.
I could list hundreds of movies I like to have on in the background.
Mikey, … Bubba Ho-Tep? Or at least the Evil Deads.
Jfu, then your challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to name one. Choose wisely.
I can’t have any movies running in the background while I do other stuff because I invariably have to sit directly in front of the TV and watch it in it’s entirety.
Just one? Snatch.
Thanks Joe, Snatch reminded of something. I’m now working, all while watching/listening to Lock, Stock…
Sour, I need multiple sources of multimedia stimulation at once. My brain is completely ADHD.
Gecko, I don’t remember caring much for Confessions. I was so excited to see that movie, and then,… eh.
Joeshi, I really don’t recall seeing this movie. May I borrow your copy? Just mail it to: Poppy Cede, Land of Poppy, France. Should get to me.
Franky, that is a very good movie! But, not for the background. For the foreground.
You haven’t seen Say Anything?!?? That movie put me in love with John Cusack (1989-2003)…I am mailing that to France right now!!
